Commence Whining About How Cold I Am In 3...2...1

It seems like a switch was flipped when the calendar went from October to November and daylight savings time ended. A storm blew in that brought us a little rain on Monday along with what for us is cold weather. Anything below 70 is cold as far as I'm concerned.

It's been a little chilly this week. Chilly enough to where I put the quilt back on the bed and actually turned the heater on for a little while this morning. Chilly enough to where I put a throw blanket over my legs while watching TV last night. And chilly enough to where I went over to Walmart and got a new pair of slipper boots because my feet get cold which makes me cranky.

I need to get new socks, too, the only ones I have left from last year are my church socks because they are HOLY. Get it? Ha ha.

I also need some new winter type clothes but that will have to wait until payday, in the meantime I'm wearing one of the two cheap sweatshirts that I got last winter, trading off with the two longer sleeved a little bit warmer shirts that I have. My wardrobe needs replenishing but number one was the slippers which I wasn't about to wait until payday for.

The only thing that I don't like about the slippers is that the soles are nubby (so you won't slip) but act as velcro when I step on the kitchen rugs, rugs I got because I was tired of dripping water on the floor while washing dishes and then having to mop up the water. I'm standing at the sink in my slippers and go to walk away and the rug is stuck to the bottom of my slipper so I have to be extra careful that I don't bring the rug along with me when leaving the kitchen. Kind of like when you try to move a cat off the bed and they dig in their claws and the bed covers go with the cat.

Speaking of bed, Keith went to nap yesterday evening before heading out on the road later in the night and for the first time he shut Millie out of the bedroom. I expected her to scratch at his door but instead she just laid by the door for a long long time, heart totally broken because she is used to getting in bed with him and has never been locked out of the bedroom before. Insert sad puppy face here.

I Fully Expected

To wake up and see snow on the ground this morning. Because that's what the weatherman said might happen.

But, no, the ground was dry at 6am, no promised rain and snow overnight. However, it did start sprinkling a little bit. Not quite cold enough to turn it into snow, though. Something that hasn't happened in these parts since 1999.

I know we are weather wimps here in central CA, moaning about how cold we are when it gets down below 70 or so. We did have frost on the ground the past few days and poor Genie's water dish was iced over yesterday morning. We have a warm box for her to sleep in on a shelf in the shed but she is too dumb to get in it. Instead she will sleep in her laundry basket with a blanket in it right outside the back door. I try to cover her up but then she jumps out and jumps back in on top of the blanket that is supposed to be covering her. I'm just waiting for the day when I discover her frozen solid in her basket.

We've been bringing Lucy into the garage at night, not that it's much warmer in there but at least it's dry and she has blankets on our old comfy office chair to lay on.

Keith may see some snow today, he went out on a dogcatch last night, where they drive a crew to meet a train and take over for the crew that has gone beyond their 12 hours on the road. He was being driven all the way to Barstow last night so is probably stuck on a train somewhere between here and there, probably waiting for his own dogcatch crew to come relieve them since there may be snow delays up in those mountains. Of course, if the train can't get through, it's doubtful that a van with a relief crew could either.

This is what most of the cats have been doing lately. Because it's cold outside!

It's Cold Outside

Brrr. At least brrr for these parts. We had a little rain last night and there is a cold wind blowing and they actually closed the interstate over the mountains for a while today because of snow. They were escorting people over this morning and then I guess they got tired of that so just closed the whole thing down. Good thing we didn't need to get to LA today, not that we usually do need to get there.

Quiet day for us, I've been reading on the couch most of the day while first Keith was looking at jobs on the internet, then napping, then finally starting on painting the trim in the kitchen. Finally! It's taken him all week to do the prep in order to paint. Slow going. I would have had the trim painted all in one day, but that's just me, screw the prep work, slap that paint on!

It will probably be another week before it is all finished.

We finally caught the big white bruiser of a cat that has been running around the neighborhood for about two years now, fathering multiple kittens and eating Lucy's food. He was too smart to go into the trap, so I read about how you get the cat used to the trap by putting food into it just inside the door and then slowly moving it further and further in. He hadn't been around as much since Lucy has been spending her nights in the garage, I used to go out and feed her early in the morning and see him sitting across the street biding his time until I went back in the house, and then scurrying over to see if there were any leftovers.

Last night Keith had put food in the trap and this morning I just happen to see his tail poking out of the trap as he checked to see if any was left, which there wasn't because he had eaten it last night and then the rain filled the bowl up with water. We filled it with food again and then this time put it way inside the trap where he would get caught this time if he went in there.

Hours go by with nothing disturbed so I kind of forgot about it and then about 2pm go outside past the trap and realize that the cat is in there staring up at me. And then I felt bad. But not bad enough to let him out of the trap, off to the pound he went! So, one less cat wandering the neighborhood and hopefully less new kittens running around this spring.

We did get out of the house yesterday afternoon and went to the movies, using 2 of the free tickets (thanks Jennifer!) that we have been saving for a good movie viewing opportunity. We went to see the latest Bond movie, Skyfall, which was fun to watch. I like going to movies well after they are released when everyone else has already seen them, and on an off day in the middle of the afternoon. Besides us there were 5 other people in the whole theater.

It was very cold in there however, and of course I had to get up and go to the bathroom halfway through, no pause buttons at the movie theater!

Would You Rather

Be cold or hot? Every summer we complain and complain and then complain some more about how hot we are and try to remember what it felt like during the winter when we complained and complained and then complained some more about how cold we were.

Winter just started and I'm already tired of it. I guess it's a good thing that we don't live where they have snow and ice and all that stuff, although we do get a little ice here in the mornings. Being cold makes me crankier than being hot I think. I'm already counting the days until spring.

For some reason I've been extra cranky this week, maybe it's the holidays approaching and all the money that we've been spending lately and the realization that with the new year comes a new tax season and all that stress with worrying about if we have it covered by having extra money taken out of Keith's checks or not and the upcoming dental work that I need or maybe it's just because I'm cold.

Yesterday I rode up to the store to get a few things for dinner and put on Keith's heavy jacket because it was cold outside but by the time I got into the store I was hot because the jacket really really keeps you warm and the store had their heaters blasting away and then they didn't have what I wanted so had to get back on the bike and ride over the bridge to Vons who had what I wanted.

I was going to make chinese chicken salad for dinner because it's so easy and we had a package of wonton strips in the cupboard and chicken in the freezer so all I needed was the dressing and some coleslaw and almonds. But I needed a certain brand of dressing because the other ones just don't taste as good and of course Save Mart doesn't carry it, thereby the over the bridge to Vons. But the salad tasted good and is so easy to make and maybe we'll just eat that every night because I've run out of dinner ideas and really really don't enjoy cooking anymore. Especially when the last few recipes that I've tried were not exactly keepers.

Anyway.

I had a good idea for an outing tonight that combines not having to cook with some holiday festiveness. We've been wanting to try Juicy Burger downtown that says they make everything fresh with local produce and beef but it's all the way downtown and we never feel like driving that far for a burger. But, if we drive down there tonight then we can look at holiday lights on the way home. Maybe that will put us in the Christmas mood.

It's Friday Already

And it's payday so I just paid the bills but couldn't pay all of them because we haven't gotten the electric bill yet. Which will probably come today since I've already paid the bills. If you don't pay your bills online yet, I highly recommend it. So much easier than writing out checks and stamping envelopes and then forgetting to mail them. Who still writes checks these days anyway? I'm always kind of stumped when I see somebody paying with a check at a store, don't you have a debit card? Or are you just floating that check for a few days? Until payday?

Speaking of money, this is the first year since I can remember that we've actually had money to buy each other gifts for Christmas. We decided to get some stockings and we'll put some small gifts in them and since we don't have a tree any bigger gifts will get put on the bookshelves where our stockings are hanging. They are hanging on the bookshelves because we don't have a fireplace never mind a mantle. I had to specify things that I could use for Keith to go buy because he really has no clue and he specified things that I could get for him. I'm just about done with his shopping but he hasn't even started mine. I just hope he doesn't pull a Homer Simpson and shop at the Quickie Mart on Christmas Eve.

I'm seriously thinking about buying some long underwear for this winter. I mentioned it to Keith which might have been a mistake because I might find long underwear in my stocking and they'll probably be the wrong size. Seriously, our local weatherman said that December is our coldest month here and I definitely believe him. I just can't seem to get warm enough and don't even want to go outside these days. Not that it snows here or anything and for a lot of people our current 34 degrees outside would be positively balmy not to mention the highs in the 50s during the day. But, I'm cold.

What else is going on? I think the Christmas Rush is kind of done with on Etsy, November was wonderful for sales but December is kind of slow so far. I guess I got spoiled with multiple sales a day in November and now only a sale or two a day seems rather anti-climactic.

Next week is Keith's vacation. He is supposed to work on all the unfinished projects around the house but I have a feeling he will be sitting in his underwear watching Oprah part of the time.
