Never mind what's for dinner today, what's for lunch? I'm already STARVING! Well, not starving because I'm sure my body could live off its stored fat for at least a few months, but I'm having a hungry day today. Probably because we ate pizza for dinner (but we did have a salad with it) last night and my carb starved stomach went OH YEAH! PIZZA! and now wants more. So, no carbs today, but I am going to eat a package of Kraft 100 calorie cheese bites. You do have to stop at only one of the little packets though, you can't eat the whole bag of little packets all at once. Even if you really want to because you are just so damn hungry today.
I had originally bought the frozen DiGiorno pizza for super bowl Sunday because it was only $4.00 and I really like pizza even though I'm not supposed to eat it, but after the frozen fried chicken during the game and Keith eating chips and crap all afternoon we didn't have dinner that night. So, since I didn't feel like cooking the chicken that I had thawed out- no surprise there, I never feel like cooking- we had the pizza last night. But with a salad.
I was wandering around the grocery store yesterday, something I seem to do a lot of these days because I'm bored and I'm hungry and I get my exercise by riding the bike to the store and I keep hoping that they will have some new wondrous low carb delicious something to eat and I usually need something anyway, something that I forgot to get during the big weekly trip to the store. So, I'm looking at the meat case which is really kind of disgusting anyway and what do I see but a package of Cow Feet. What the hell? Who eats cow feet and how gross does that sound? What's for dinner honey? Cow Feet. Yum. And that's exactly what the label on the package said, too. Cow Feet.
Now, I've heard of pickled pigs feet and have actually seen pickled pigs feet and why anyone would eat that I don't know, but for some reason Cow Feet sounds even worse than pig feet.
No, we are not having Cow Feet for dinner. Ever. Even if I were starving. Which I am. The cheese bites have been inhaled and I am still hungry.

Another Senior Moment
You know that you are a senior citizen when you are seriously considering buying one of those little pill sorter day of the week boxes to organize your pill taking. I am now on not one, not two, but three meds and it may get a little confusing. Not to mention the numerous bottles of vitamins and fish oil pills, etc.
I've been pretty used to taking my blood pressure and thyroid pills first thing in the morning, making sure I haven't eaten yet and won't for another hour or so (thyroid pills need an empty stomach) and drinking a full glass of water (thyroid pills also need a full glass of water). But now I've got to remember to take my new cholesterol pills at bedtime. Does it have to be the exact same time each night? Should I set my alarm for 10 pm which isn't exactly bedtime but pretty close? I'm doing good to remember to put coffee and water in the coffee pot each night so Keith can just flip it on in the morning, will I remember to add in taking a pill along with filling up that coffee pot? Should I put the pill bottle on the bedside table with some big flashing lights next to it so that as I'm stumbling into bed I'll remember to take my pill?
And speaking of senior moments, the other night I was going to heat up some water for my evening green tea, so I pulled the pyrex measuring cup out of the cupboard next to the microwave where I keep the measuring cup handy for tea making, filled it up with water, and then proceeded to put it back into the cupboard by the microwave still full of water.
Last night we had a good low carb dinner, some bbq baked chicken breasts and some wonderful butternut squash with a spray of that buttery flavor no cal spray stuff and some splenda brown sugar on it. The squash was SO GOOD! and so EASY TO COOK! except that I make Keith cut it open because butternut squash is hard to cut open and you have to use a giant sized knife which scares me. All you do is put it cut side down in a baking pan with 1/2" of water, and bake away for about 45 minutes at 375. Baking it right along side the chicken. We also have an acorn squash waiting in the fridge for another night. Yum. And filling, too. And fibery.
The good thing about BOTH of us needing to lower our cholesterol and watch our blood sugar is that we are kind of in this together, both needing to be on the same eating plan. It's making it much easier to plan a dinner since one of us won't be sitting there eating mashed potatoes and sneering at the other because they can't have any delicious mashed potatoes. Although Keith did eat some potato chips left over from pre-diet days last night. But it didn't bother me, really it didn't!

No More Bread?
Or potatoes, pasta, and rice?
Keith and I went back to the doctor yesterday afternoon for our follow ups on our blood draws and we both have too much fat in our blood (and on our bodies) and our cholesterol is too high and have to eliminate starch from our diets. Like bread. I love bread. What the heck else do you eat for lunch if it's not a sandwich?
Salad? Yeah, salads are great as long as you can have some BREAD with them.
Soup? Same thing, you need some BREAD along with that soup.
Rolled up lunch meat with cheese inside and no BREAD? Sounds good, but when did a rolled up piece of lunch meat with cheese inside ever really fill you up?
Eggs? Sure, eggs are great when you've got some TOASTED BREAD to go with them.
A hamburger patty? Much better on a HAMBURGER BUN MADE OUT OF BREAD!
Arghh.
Then even without the bread we've got to make sure the other stuff we eat isn't too high in cholesterol. Like eggs. And hamburger patties. And salad dressing. And cheese. And lunch meat.
Arghh.
We also need to exercise more, so after dinner last night, which was leftover chicken enchiladas which we'll probably never get to eat again because of the tortillas, and low carb tortillas are not an option, because have you ever TASTED one of those, I made Keith go for a bike ride around the neighborhood. I really enjoyed it, but he went under protest. I reminded him of the days when we went bike riding all the time and remember how enjoyable that was and is this really all that bad and don't you feel better for getting a little exercise and fresh air?
He does have a good excuse for not wanting to do anything, though. His testosterone levels are way way low, and have been way way low for quite a while now, and not having enough testosterone in a man's body causes them to be tired, cranky, irritable, gain weight easily, have bone loss, and lots and lots of other things. So, despite the INCREDIBLY high cost of the meds, he is going to start using a testosterone cream that you put on your shoulders and arms each day that will fix that low testosterone thing and hopefully renew his energy and in general make him feel much better. And not so darn cranky.
We'll see.
And wish us luck on the no bread thing. Keith's favorite snack after work is nachos and chips are like even more evil than bread, so...
